How do we ‘evangelise’?

What does it mean to evangelise?

It simply means to preach the gospel. This is done in several ways:

  • Street preachers
  • Facebook posts
  • Text messages
  • A friendly stranger on the street handing out flyers

But what about a new LWFITC woman? A woman on a journey with Christ. How do we approach people and talk to them about faith? Here’s what we discussed about evangelising in our final #LWFHOWTO meeting…

Introduction

We have an amazing gift of salvation, we are blessed to know Jesus and have a relationship him but what happens when we want to share this with others who may not who Jesus is? Our family, co-worker, friend? How do we evangelise to them?

Evangelism: the announcement, proclamation or the preaching of the gospel- the good news of Jesus Christ. The word evangelism comes from the Greek word euangelion which means the gospel or good news

What do you think evangelism is?

Some Bible verses on evangelism

·         Mark 16:15

o   And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature

·         Isaiah 6:8

o   Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send,
And who will go for Us?”Then I said, “Here am I! Send me

·         1 Corinthians 1:17

o   For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect

·         Luke 19:10

o   But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry

·         2 Timothy 4:5

o   But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry

·         Acts 13:47

o   For so the Lord has commanded us:‘I have set you as a light to the Gentiles,
That you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth’

1.       Pray

a.       Pray that God will open their hearts, their eyes and ears. 2 Corinthians 4:4 tells us the God of this world has blinded them to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of God

b.      Pray that God will convince them of his love for them-John 3:16

c.       Pray for wisdom as how to minister them-James 1:5 says if you lack wisdom ask God, who gives generously and it’ll be given

2.       Let the Holy Spirit lead us

a.       Ask for God to guide you to the people that need it. Acts 16:6-10

                                                              i.      Paul and his companions travelled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to. So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas.  During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

3.       Be Bold

a.       Cannot be ashamed of the gospel

b.       Have to be willing

4.       Be like Christ

a.       Have to live godly lives for others to see, so they can see the change God made in you

5.       Why are you evangelising?

a.       Are we doing it to win souls for Christ? What is the purpose behind it?

6.       Ways of evangelism

a.       Traditional vs Modern

                                                               i.      How do we share to others about God? Handing leaflets, preaching on the road or social media?

b.       Be a light to others- Acts 13:47, Matthew 5:15-16, Matthew 5:14, 1 Peter 3:15

c.       Sharing your story with others

Questions to think over:

Do you think the traditional way of evangelism, works and why?

Can you think of other ways to evangelise?

What do we evangelise about? Is evangelism a gift (Ephesians 4:11-12) or are we all called to?
