In those days John the Baptist came to the Judean wilderness and began preaching. His message was, 2 “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near”
3 The prophet Isaiah was speaking about John when he said,
“He is a voice shouting in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming!
Clear the road for him! ’”
John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus by encouraging people to leave their sinful ways behind, so that their hearts would be open to receiving the Messiah. We are the John the Baptists of our time. It is now our responsibility to spread the gospel and help others to prepare their hearts to receive Jesus.
Mark 16:15 – And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.”
Unlike John the Baptist, we have the privilege of social media. There are so many inspiring bloggers and you-tubers about today that use social media to share the gospel and encourage people in the ways of the Lord. Social media provides a platform for Christians to spread the gospel at any time and place. It is a very powerful tool because it reaches people on a global scale.
It is important to remember that evangelism is the responsibility of ALL believers. It does not matter who you are or where you come from, once you have salvation, once you have accepted Jesus Christ into your heart, you have the power to evangelise!
‘’ The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you’’ (Romans 8:11).
A lot of people feel they are not ‘saved’ enough or they don’t know enough scriptures…
No one is more saved than the next person, once you are saved, you are saved. The little scripture you know could be enough to stir something in someone. That scripture or encouraging message you post may be the first time someone has heard about Jesus.
Above all it is important to remember that we cannot do it in our own strength. Our qualification comes from God and he has equipped us with the tools we need.
2 Corinthians 3:5:
5 It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualification comes from God.
2 Peter 1:3:
3 By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvellous glory and excellence.
As social media is accessible to so many people, there are a lot of things out there so we have to be cautious of the information we are taking in.
As I mentioned before there are many blogs and you-tube channels out there. One can sometimes feel overwhelmed by different messages being preached left, right and centre. It is very important that we check that the information we are receiving aligns with his word. We should also continue ask the Lord to help us to develop a discerning spirit because not everything out there is of God.
‘’ When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth’’ (John 16:13).
‘’Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world’’ (1 John 4:1).
We need to be equally as cautious when we are putting information out there. It is important for us to ask God for wisdom surrounding our posts. It’s so easy to post nowadays that we may sometimes fall in the trap of posting before we think. But it is important for us to check ourselves so that we lead each other along the right path. We should also consider the fact that it could be someone’s first encounter with Christianity. Again, we are not alone in this, the Lord will always make provisions for us.
‘’If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.’’ (James 1:5)
‘’Teach me good discernment and knowledge’’ (Psalms 119:66).
Let us be bold in declaring the good news of Jesus Christ to the world!
How are they to call on one they have not believed in? And how are they to believe in one they have not heard of? And how are they to hear without someone preaching to them? (Romans 10:14).
